[ nikolai had been dreaming about her.

lately he had been shifting back into the demon whenever he fell asleep, leaving his grisha squad to chain him up and keep him under control, but they hadn't assumed anything coherent was going on when his hazel eyes were overtaken with black. not as far as he could tell. he preferred it that way, because he didn't know if he would be able to answer honestly.

he β€” or the monster? both? β€” had been dreaming about her. alina. alina and her scent as he remembered it: intoxicating, sweet, what sunlight must smell like, if it had a smell. an omega.

this kind of aggressive obsession hadn't been a part of him before. he’d been an omega β€” a shameful secret, something he worked hard to hide, through excessive cleanliness to hide the scent, corporalki, and saints only knew how many concoctions he’d drank to try and mask it, to dull the sensation of a heat. but all of that completely disappeared after the merzost flooded his veins. whatever happened to him turned him upside down and inside out. wrung out his entire existence, leaving him a different shape entirely.

it should have been a dream come true??? this had been what he'd spent most of his adulthood longing for. being an alpha meant no longer having to worry about What Might Happen if everyone knew, if there would be yet another reason to question his throne-worthiness. but it never actually felt like him β€” instead, it was the monster.

and even without her constant presence, even with only brief visits to keramzin, it still not only remembered, but full-on fixated on her. human nikolai had been like "no it's ok alina go live your life you don't have to marry me, cheers & good luck," the alpha part of him had already chosen.

(could he really blame all of it on the monster? as if staring at her had never caused some kind of warmth to rise inside him before. cute denial you've got there, lantsov.)

finally, whether through a chain accidentally done too loosely on zoya's part or sheer stubbornness on the monsters, he frees himself and goes blasting through his bedroom window with the same repetitive loop of thoughts burned into his mind:

take. claim. breed. mine.

that takes him dead ass all the way through ravka to keramzin. when you're just that thirsty.

the monster doesn't rush to break in through alina's window in the same way it had his own, mostly because it sees mal and is doing a math-lady plan for how to snatch alina away from another alpha. the effect that leaves is the demon watching through her window in the dead of night like some jump scare horror movie bullshit. ]
